The Chateau of Henri IV in Nerac

This castle now hosts a museum with a collection of paintings and archeological findings which recount the history of Nerac and the Pays d'Albret. The works shown cover an extensive period starting in the prehistoric times to the middle ages and passing through the conquest of the Romans.

From 1577 to 1582 this was the residence of the king Henri IV and his wife Queen Margot, it was the apogee of the king's court in Nerac during the 16th century. What are left today is the north wing and the interior courtyard.

This castle museum of Henri IV beholds a rich collection of art and artifacts that were found during various excavations in the pays d’Albret.

You can enjoy the year round exposition “Henri de Navarre on the Steps of the Throne” which describes the family history and Henri IV’s life. Through paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and historical models you will relive the spirit of the court during the 16th century.
